Level 1 Athletics Coaching Course Concludes

World Athletics Coaching Program to Propel Ghana’s Athletics Growth

Ghana Athletics, in collaboration with the National Sports College in Winneba, successfully organized a World Athletics Level 1 Coaching Course from June 8 to 14, 2025. The initiative aimed to enhance the technical skills of local coaches and promote the long-term development of athletics in the country.

According to Mr. Bawah Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics, the program forms part of the association’s broader strategy to strengthen coaching capacity nationwide. He emphasized that the certification, endorsed by World Athletics, is facilitated by highly qualified and accredited instructors.

The Level 1 course serves as the foundational tier in a structured coaching development pathway. Participants who successfully complete it may progress to Level 2, which focuses on event-specific training—such as sprints, distance running, jumps, and throws—while Level 3 targets elite athlete preparation for global competitions, including the Olympics and World Championships.

Eligibility for the course required completion of a preliminary coaching program to ensure candidates were adequately prepared. Mr. Fuseini noted that introducing this prerequisite has significantly improved success rates, which the association hopes will exceed 80% this year, building on the previous 75% pass rate recorded in Kumasi.

The curriculum covered 13 core modules, including coaching philosophy, injury prevention, and performance management. The course was led by seasoned professionals such as Dr. Austin Luguterah, Mr. Apidogo Baba, and Mr. Christopher Darko Amankrah, ensuring a high-quality learning experience for all participants.
